Personal History

The Child of War

Sudis Erris is approximately 37 years old. His exact birthdate and birthplace are presently unknown, but was assessed by a Bajoran physician in Verath and later confirmed by Starfleet Medical upon his enlistment into Starfleet. He was born within the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) circa 2338. The Cardassians bombarded and raided his settlement.

The children were taken, and the majority of them, including Sudis Erris, were brought to Terok Nor for processing and placement. The children were to be placed into Cardassian households back on Cardassia.

Bajoran Resistance fighters freed the children and placed them in the homes of Resistance sympathisers. Sudis was assessed by Bajoran medical professionals placing him at age four. He was placed with foster parents Perin and Anara in Verath, a tropical hamlet in the southern hemisphere on Bajor. His foster parents had lost both of their adult children during their fight for a Free Bajor.

In 2340, the Bajoran Resistance sought information about the children who were freed from the Cardassian processing facility on Terok Nor. They were able to locate the next of kin, all except for Erris.

Erris had no recollection of his life before the Cardassians' abduction due to the traumatic episode. Anara and Perin brought him to countless therapists who verified that he had no recollection of his life before.

Life with Anara and Perin

Anara and Perin took an immediate liking to Erris. Having his childish energy around their once-empty home. When information came in 2340 that no next of kin of Erris had been identified, they took it as a sign from the Prophets. As a family, they adopted the surname Sudis, which in Bajoran means renewal in unity and healing.

The Orb Experience

As a child in Verath, Erris was at the shrine daily with Anara. The shrine was busier than normal. Erris was keeping himself entertained by running in and through the crowds, only to stumble into a room with an Orb. The experience showed him his path in fragments, some of which have revealed their meaning over time, and others are still waiting. It pointed him to leave Bajor and join Starfleet.

Leaving Bajor - The Paghsorah

His adoptive parents sent him away to Earth as an act of faith, honouring what the Prophets had shown him. Anara framed his departure as his Paghsorah - the Bajoran rite of discernment in which a young person goes out into the universe to find their own conscious relationship with the Prophets before returning to commit to the faith as an adult.

Erris left Bajor at approximately sixteen on a smuggler's barge arranged by Perin and joined Trill Renn Wrex. The current Wrex host regaled him with his previous host's exploits and what his father Perin was like as a young man his age -- all paid by the life debt that the Wrex symbiont owed his father.

He traveled extensively on Earth before attending Starfleet Academy. He spent significant time in Tibet, and Buddhist monks found his directness charming and exhausting. He was left with a deepened mindfulness practice. The directness remained. The reflex became a choice. He also encountered Hinduism and Confucianism, traditions that grounded his understanding of their own humanity.

He returned to the faith not because he was born into it, but because he chose it. The earring was not inherited. It was a conscious commitment made at the end of his Paghsorah.

Service Record

Starfleet Academy (2357-2361)

Strategic Operations track. Strong analytical performer. Precise, direct, not naturally political. Met Connor Nolan during orientation week — Nolan was a year ahead and helped freshman cadets adjust. The two men were acquaintances at the Academy before their friendship developed later.

Deep Space 4 (2361-2370)

Strategic Operations analyst. Promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, then full Lieutenant.

Accessed classified Starfleet Intelligence records to verify the existence of Tymon Wrex — personal rather than operational. Triggered a visit from Captain Taviel Valesh, a Betazoid officer identifying herself as Starfleet Security's Internal Security Agency (SFS-ISA). Formal reprimand filed. Challenge coin left. Starfleet Intelligence has maintained a quiet eye on him ever since. She is currently vying for a Commodore posting — Deputy Director of Counterintelligence, Gamma Quadrant.

USS Mt. Robson (2370-2373)

New Orleans class vessel. Attaché posting during the Dominion Cold War period. Received specialized firearms training at an off-ship facility during this posting. Transitioned from pure analyst to operational officer. Nolan Connor also served aboard the Mt. Robson during this period. Their friendship developed during these years.

Dominion War (2373-2375)

Commanded a classified infiltration unit aboard the USS Coventry — Defiant class — captained by Captain Harvey Guiteau-Ravaillac.

The captain was a Changeling infiltrator. Erris had suspicions but couldn't confirm them before the mission launched. Gave the order to drop his unit onto occupied Betazed as the ship came under attack. The USS Coventry was destroyed during the engagement. He did not know this while on the ground.

Led surviving personnel through six weeks of guerrilla warfare on occupied Betazed — building local resistance networks, conducting hit and run operations against Dominion and Cardassian forces. Most of his regiment survived to extraction.

Lieutenant Junior Grade David Richardson served under his command during those six weeks. David died stepping in front of something meant for Erris. Erris was there when it happened. He has never told David's wife Jennifer. He carries that specific guilt every day and prays about it every day.

Following Betazed, Erris personally visited the families and next of kin of every crew member lost — not required by regulation, a choice rooted in what his parents never received when their biological children died in the resistance. He attended David Richardson's funeral at Jennifer's request.

Treated aboard the USS Nightingale by Dr. Jennifer Richardson — David's wife — following extraction from Betazed.

Field promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Given command of the USS Threshold — Saber class — with latitude to handpick his crew, facilitated in part by Taviel Valesh's quiet influence. Field was promoted to Captain before the war's end.

Postwar review reduced his rank to Commander. No formal finding. Offered the XO posting aboard the USS Venture by Nolan Connor. Accepted.
