This was it. This was the first day of the rest of her life. That sounded perhaps a bit melodramatic, after all, would a practical person not say that every day was the first day of the rest of one's life? But in this case, today really marked a significant step. Her first day on active duty again after a prolonged recovery period following severe injuries sustained during the Dominion war. The final morning on the Kalen farm arrived beneath clear skies and the sort of sunshine that seemed almost custom-built to make departures more difficult.
Tom was awake before everyone else.
Years of Starfleet service had made sleeping late something of a lost art, regardless of how much free time circumstances occasionally provided. By the time the first hints of dawn had begun creeping across the fields, he was already sitting on the farmhouse porch with a mug of coffee balanced between both hands.
The farm was quiet.

Batos: Large social herd animals, similar to the bovines of Earth, or the Shaak of Vulcan. Averaging six-hundred and fifty Kilograms, one-point-eight meters in height, shaggy, horned… relatively docile. Something like a six legged, highland cow with two tails, capped with an armored thistle. A constant in Bajoran life featuring prominently in stories and folklore. From providing meat and hides, to centering religious ceremonies where there were Bajorans there were almost inevitably Batos.
Except New Bajor.
Operation Lantern had apparently been a wild success. With the first phase done it was time to ramp the recolonization effort into full swing.…

Commander Sudis Erris emerged from the Turbolift onto the Galaxy-class bridge module. This was by far the largest bridge configuration he had seen with spacious amount of duty stations. He counted fifteen duty stations on the bridge. The brain of starship operations. He found himself by the Security station, "Morning, Lieutenant. I am first officer Commander Sudis."
